fuckwits that dont wear helmets!!!!

'Bout 3 years ago i had a bit of a spill,hit a kerb at about 20 and flipped over,still clipped in and landed on my head,just above the temple right side.
The injuries to my neck were caused by my head being pushed beyond its limits.The consultant told me it was one of the worst cases of whiplash he had ever treated[a bloody brace],but that if i had been wearing a helmet then the extra inch or so it sticks out,would have pushed my neck over further and most likely snapped it.
I feel very lucky.
I would recommend a helmet off road,due to trees :lol ,but on the road its crush and sudden shock injuries caused by some hackney doing a U turn or so.
If some dont want to wear it ,then its up to them to decide not some nanny orientated twat[no offence, im generalising].

The amount of people I see in town wearing helmets that don't fit properly or tilted back is frightening. I remember reading somewhere that it can be more dangerous than no helmet if you hit the ground at a certain angle.
I have to confess I don't wear one in town I just find it too uncomfortable and sweaty. But I always wear one on the rare occasions I get time to go offroad.

Rotational head injuries (the really nasty kind that are most likely to kill you) are actually worse if you have a helmet. Because the area that hits the ground is wider, your head is twisted faster. There have been attempts to protect riders against this with a kind of "second skin" on the outside of the helmet that slides as the head hits the ground, but as bicycle helmets need ventilation unfortunately the technology is limited to motorcycle helmets.
So there you go. Helmets might protect the user from some kinds of accident, but they might make other kinds worse. Telling someone they should categorically wear one in an attempt to make our hobby somehow "safe" is ill-informed. I understand what you were trying to do and it was nice of you, but no matter what your anecdotes are this is the general consensus we draw from the (large) amount of research on the subject.
Incidentally, when cycle helmets became law in Australia there was an almost immediate reduction in the numbers of cyclists killed. This was not because the helmets protected them, though; the reason was simply that many cyclists gave up cycling and started to drive instead.
Helmets should always be a personal choice.
