How should they be put back on ?
Newbie error

Look "inside out" to me. Also make sure the small tabs align with the crank arm. Did you remove the 42t ring at all?

Ps give me shout when they come down to £25.

love that mirror finish...

i have the same crank (98 LX, but not as shiny) on my GT and i've had a good look to see if yours are the wrong way around (as suggested) and each time i look at my chainset on my bike then walk back to the computer to view yours i get mixed up again! i should print off a pic and compare it that way!! :?

anyway, you can't take the black outer chainring off. it's sort of riveted on to the spidery thing the middle and granny rings are on. i did think of taking it off before and stripping and polishing it so the whole set up is silver but on inspection noticed that they can't be removed...

on another note, does anybody know if there is a 'spider' available for these LX cranks to allow either a 5 bolt pattern middle ring only set up or 4 bolt (love the renthal rings) because i want to turn my bike into an 8 speed (it's only for commuting) cheers

Ben is very knowledgeable. I must confess I wouldn't have known that the rings were in the wrong position, but I expect he'll let us into the secret presently, as he's good like that.

The big ring on the M569 and M739 are permanently riveted onto the spider, but the spider/ring can be taken off and replaced. I managed to buy a NOS M569 big ring for £8 on Ebay t'other day, but that was exceptionally cheap I think.

Just the tabs in teh wrong position. not sure if it is a problem on the small ring as I don't know the profiling up to the ramps on these, but for the middle ring the ramp on to a and off it are it the wrong place now for teh SG-X shifting.

That's all I ment

Yes you can get 5 arm CD spiders for them, probably about £20 ish new, petra cycles or other places may stock them but a few have been for sale on here, in fact often get the arms thrown in free.

The outer 42t ring is held onto the crank arm. A tool can be used to remove it and replace when worn. A spider was available to allow you to bolt the m569 or m739 arms to the spider and add your own rings. The last shimano square taper xt set, m750 had. Spidsr that could be used. Spare m739 or m569 outer rings are getting rare, so if you want to use these square taper cranks, then a spider is needed to use regular 42 or 44t rings.
The 32 and 22t rings need to be fitted carefully otherwise shifting will be poor.
Btw, the 42t outer ring on these cranks could easily be removed to add in the polishing of the cranks.

M739 and m569 were a bit of a con. Little real differance, except the 42t ring was either black(lx) or silver(xt). Even the arms are the same.

Yes the arms weigh exactly the same between the LX and XT.

Just reread the singlespeed bit.

Buy this set, lop the top of the Y on the arms and fit a larger middle ring. It is iirc the first of the now very common 4 bolt 104/64 ring sizes so grab yourself a 38T and there you go.

Do any of you clever people know if this would replace my LX chainset which is on my '99 Klein. It is the original. Thank you.

Thanks for all the help guys rings now corrected. ;)
Chris D i think these would be a straight swap, but i'd wait for someone more well informed than myself to confirm, after all i put the rings back on wrong after polishing
At least i'm learning

Thank you.

The only diference I can see is that the arms on yours where they split into the y shape are symetrical but mine do not appeasr to be so.

If they are compatable I would be very interested.

(hi fluffy chicken!)

first of all i'm always quietly impressed by the wealth of friendly knowledge on this site. :D

i did have that idea myself about cutting the 'Y' bits (that attach the 42 chainring) off. i might just restrict myself to polishing off the black on the outer over xmas (it's on my commute bike) as the middle and granny on mine are pretty new. a different spider for a single ring would be my best bet (can always swap it back if needed)

if i didn't have my eye on one or two things on ebay i'd think about buying this and having a crack at converting it into a single ring set up though!

somebody must want to snap this up, it's a bargin!!
