Front wheel bearings

Re:

Cheap lithium based grease. Basically it's a low quality product that will dry out and turn to soap.

Unequivocally banned from use in my workshop.

They will probably argue that it's fit for purpose but the clue is in the name.
Carlube is designed for cars.

The bearings on bike hubs require high quality, low viscosity grease.
We mostly use TF2 Teflon based red grease for this application in the workshop.
Not every bike shop works to the same standards though.

Genuine 'want to learn' question. Would the blue Mobil XHP222 grease be suitable for cup & cone bearing hubs?

https://www.mtbriders.co.uk/workshop/25 ... rease.html

I've got it for my Hope stuff & repacking cartridge bearings after I saw it recommended in a Hopetech video so have also been using it on retro cup & cone hubs & pedals.

I have also noticed that everything was so tight this morning eg I think they did that up to tight aswell proper dinlows

I've not used that Mobil branded blue grease but it looks very similar to the Mobil derived lithium complex 'Repel' grease I get from my bearing supplier.
As such I'd suggest it's one and the same.
It has a higher viscosity than the red TF2 grease, so we use it more on bearings that rotate less like headsets, pivot bearings and bottom brackets.
It's still good for hubs, just a bit more drag, but my preference would be TF2 for a cup and cone hub. The blue stuff has good water repellency and is very sticky. So much so it's too thick to use in a grease gun.

I'm no expert on grease, but we do use plenty of it so I do have a somewhat informed opinion.

It'll be chain lubes next...

Thanks for the info. The XHP222 works ok in the big grease gun on the lads SC pivot bearing grease nipples & my small dispenser like the Pace one so may be thinner than the Repel.

Chains - I'm a philistine. Only use GT85.

GT-85 smells nice but is a water displacer and not a chain lube.
It'll last about five minutes as a chain lube.

We had an old boy who came in the shop ( thinking about it he was probably the same age as i am now!), who constantly had chain issues....stiff links, creaking noises, covered in crap etc. The chain looked well lubed and he said he lubed it.

On his third visit, after one good oiling and link loosening and then a new chain, we ask what he was oiling them with....oil seemed present.

" FAIRY LIQUID....always used it, seems nice and slippery"

We always feared for his wife, given his appalling lubrication choices!

A cautionary tale that "not all thats slippery is black gold"

Hahahaha that’s made my day seeing that well I’ve managed to change it anyway and it’s spinning freely now but it’s going back in to get a full strip down next week and a full reassemble
