Front Suspension Question - 24" wheel?

Hi all,

random one here, but bear with me.

I have a 2000 stumpy which was designed for 80mm forks. I am currently running a 120mm fork up front and clearly the ride is a bit all over the place. My question is this - Would it be possible to improve the ride by running a 24" disc wheel up front therefore lowering the front end whilst keeping the 26" at the back?

Has anyone done something similar?

thanks

If the fork you're talking about is the one which is pictured, then it doesn't look too long at all.. In fact I think it looks just right!

Yes, you could run the bike with a 24" front wheel - there's no law against it. Perhaps get hold of a cheap 24" from somewhere, bolt your disc rotor to it and take it for a spin to see how it feels.

The handling would be slightly different - not just from a ride height / head angle point of view but because the smaller wheel would handle differently compared to a 26". You might find that the front end would be more responsive/twitchy.

My advice would be to get a 24" wheel, and try it. Ignore what anyone else might say about it being 'wrong'... It's your bike so it's up to you!

Great response, thank you. I will take your advice and try it. The photo is slightly misleading as the ground wasn't level and the rear is raised slightly by the tree roots.

Thanks again.. worth a try I reckon!

Can those Tora forks be travel adjusted with a spacer or two to bring them down to 100 or 80mm?

I think some Tora forks can be, but it may depend on the model of Tora, which ones do you have?

Double post there, sorry. They are Tora tk coil 120mm. I'm sure I could space them out but also kinda like the idea of doing something a bit different!

I suggest you buy an 80mm and stick with that.It appears you are beginning to get into a never ending fankle
Before long you'll have a 24" front wheel,a steerer extender and risers on a 20 degree rise stem..... reversed
