If the braze on clamp is wrong, cut it off. A clamp will fit anywhere.

It's there to offer a whisker of weight saving - and a huge loss of adaptability.

It's time has come. Go with usability.
 
My #1 road bike from circa '88 has the braze-on and I regret using it, dumb idea youthful folly. I was more swayed by fashion (what the pros ride) back then. Tempted to file it off, but I still like the paint on that frame. If I ever choose to repaint, that'll be a no-brainer.

Good perspectives that make me feel less guilty about going this route if the braze-on is in the wrong place.

It's not like the frame is super collectable or rare, so modifying it a bit isn't committing a huge sin against history or economy... Plus I am going to need to do a bunch of touch up on the frame as it is, so one other spot is not the end of the world...
