Front deraileur set up......Exige Mountain.

Trying yesterday to set up the front deraileur on my 1986/8 Marin Bear Valley & could I get it to work properly????
I can get the deraileur to change onto all 3 cogs whilst on the bike stand, but take it off the stand and try to change whilst riding
& the thing will not change onto the largest cog. I have read through Sheldon Brown's front deraileur article & still cannot get it to work
whilst riding. One other thing I noticed is that the deore thumbies I am using are very hard to move, almost as if the cable tension is too tight!

Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated as once this is done the bike is ready to go.

with the derailleur in the "big ring" position, can you move the mechanism out further by hand?

If not, then it's sat on the outer limit screw, slacken this one off a bit and try again

If you can, try tightening the cable slightly.
