French pedal threads, I'm struggling here

I had a nightmare finding 14mm Frennch threaded pedals so I had my Peugeot crankset tapped out to 9/16" British thread. Now I can fit 99.9% of pedals into them! I don't really think this will reduce the value of the crankset, it just makes it infinitely more usable.

French threads were still fairly common in France through the eighties, with one or two late hangers-on into the nineties.

Here's an example (from ebay.fr) of a pair of MAVIC cranks with a 1987 date code, and metric threads:

Can someone help he out here?!

I've got Mallard pedals that I bought in classifieds (dont even know why).
The owner says that they are 9/16 but it seems to me that the threads are slightly larger and shorter than my shimano ones.
Here is the pic. Mallard is on the left.
