freebie music software - recommendations?

Is there any free music making software out there that you recommend?

I like making plinky plonky Vangellis/ Jarre/ Orbit/ The Orb type stuff.

I guess not strictly free, but I've found some of the stuff you get on magazine cover discs can be good (computer music, future music, etc).

Depending on what you are doing the answer may vary.

If you are inputting your work then something like Logic or Cubase may well be the ticket. If you are looping then there are many options.

There are a couple of Linux solutions which look pretty good.... Can't remember the name though and I never got my network connection working on Linux so I could download them due to consistently choosing the wrong network adapters!

The only annoying this is a time out box ( like Winzip..) which comes up on start up if you don't buy it after 60 days, but i can cope with that...
