Free alternatives to Microsoft office excel

I have a new net book and was not very impressed that the whole MS package that is already in it needs paying for, i have a 60 day free trail and then it's "get your money out" time.
I was wandering if anyone knows of a free alternative and if so, which one to get.
I would scour the net myself but i don't know what I'm really looking for

Ive got something called 'open office'
Mate installed it for me
It's free
Admittedly i dont use it too often so i cant rate it for you

It doesn't have to brilliant, just so i can enter my accounts for work, that's all.

yes go for Open Office - it's supposed to be cross-compatible with all the Microsoft products.

The advantage is you can access your spreadsheets anywhere. Excel compatible as well.

+1 for open office, brilliant bit of software.

Xubuntu is awesome too as a free alternative to Windows and comes with its own alternative to the Microsoft Office package.
