Fred Salmon, so where did he go? Also rate his components

I had some FS bars on my bike bitd. They were narrow and they were light. Not very on-trend in this day and age.

many moons ago Fred had a shop in the middle of Stockport (near Robbies brewery). This was about the time when he first brought out his own range of kit. He also sold off his trade bikes in the shop - I remember seeing a nice looking Look road bike rebadged as Muddy Fox I think. he lives down the road, often see him around. He was known as one of the nicest guys on the race circuit, and he still is a nice guy.
Shop in Whaley is pretty good - good range of road and mountain bikes. Often has a good stock of 2nd hand steeds for sale (worth checking out for retrobike gold! I've seen a few zolatone marins and some proper Orange clockworks)

I built up a cheap and cheerful Singlespeed for my brother and picked up some Fred Salmon bars, stem and seatpost off Ebay for very reasonable money. They ain't high end but look good and good value for money..

Fred has a shop called The Bike Factory in Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire.

I didn't realise that was his, been meaning to drop in for a while.

I guess none of the stuff was made in the UK then? Tempted by Wadsy's ti skewers but it's supposed to be as Brit as possible :roll:

Or maybe the reason you are slow is because you're not buying the special stuff, visiting the local shop, or drinking your aqua vita.

QF (as he was known for reasons I won't go into) was regularly seen in Rusholme curry houses after races. Never met him but he was very well-liked on the Manchester scene as being a good egg but a bit of wheeler and dealer.

I suppose he was a bit ahead of his time really - think of the amount of brands nowadays that are just rebranded far east stuff - no-one thinks of it as poor or low quality. Absolutely nothing wrong with them and it looks like Fred knew that.
^^^^^ those stems look amazing!!! But things like the booster put me off - never liked the fish emblem myself.
I think I might look out for one of those stems. :-D
