Frame Sprayer @up North

Hi,

Does anyone know what's happened to Chris Marshall? I went to his old workshop in Keighley today and it's closed, the garage in front reckons he's been gone a while and there is an asbestos sign on the door.

Has he moved or closed permanently, anyone know?

Re:

Don't know what happened to him but if any of you have tried doing a good paintjob on a frame I'd say he's probably shut up shop due to losing money , £100 for a strip and respray is ludicrous if you are trying to earn a living , that's pushing it as a guvvy job for a make .
The reason Bob Jackson/Argos/ Ellis Briggs etc are still in business is because they charge enough money to pay there staff, pay the overheads for premises/insurance/tax/ni etc so that is why a respray costs what it costs from them .
Just sit down and work out how many man hours it takes to strip, prep and paint a frame (2 or 3 coats primer , then the top coat and lacquer ) even for a single colour let alone multicolour and then look at the prices again .
I'm not in the bike business but get the same in the car industry , moan moan moan how car you justify charging £45>£50 per hour , well sir it's like this premises , tax , insurance , tools and equiptment, general upkeep of tools and premises an then in the last 2 days of every month I actually make some profit to pay my mortgage , oh the joys of working for oneself .

Re:

He worked alone in a tiny shed behind a garage, I've had a frame done by him before, he's top notch, a proper frame builder who knows his stuff, been going years. Also had a frame done at Bob Jackson, before the hipster spike in popularity of a few years ago, the price was similar to Chris but the work far inferior.

Whatever has happened to him it's a great shame if he's closed, hoping he's just moved, if anyone knows would be great to hear.

Re:

He is now working from home, still does a fantastic job, currently doing another of our MKM's, after just replacing a fractured steerer on my Wife's MKM (how it didn't collapse I don't know!)
His number is,

Re:

He moved because the landlord wanted the workshop back for re development. As said he is a first class painter and frame builder. Trained at Pennine cycles.Done quite a few paint jobs and some repairs for me over the years and I have always been well pleased. You really cant go wrong with him
