Even if you have the number you really need a central register in order to check provenance.I hate the idea of either having my bikes stolen or of buying someone else's nicked pride and joy but it is so difficult to police the history of 20 year old bikes.

have a look, see how many registered Cannondales have been stolen, I know it doesn't stop them being stolen but improves the odds of getting it back.

I'd like to live where you live, up here there's not a chance the police would bother their arses looking for a 20 year old mountain bike, serial number or no serial number.

Down here the police would log it as an incident (so it didn't show up in their crime figures) which would then be automatically deleted after 12 months.

In many ways the sale of parts is a bigger problem.Instead of a possibly unique bike which the owner could recognise from a picture,the bike bits are auctioned off and they have no identifying marks.
