As the title really,

I have tried my LBS and they suggested a couple of frame renovation places but they don't seem to be able to help either, anyone had this done by anyone before, I need about 1-1/2" extra.

any RB solutions out there

weird isn't it, i remember in the early 90's it was quite common to beable to walk into a shop and get thread cut, these days not so much, they all seem to recommend frame builders.

i myself had to buy a thread tap so i could get mine done at work by the machine shop guys.

here's the place i bought the tool, russell was the guy if memory serves, he was very helpful

Depending on the quality of the steerer tube it may be possible. A cheaper fork will often cut but may end up bits of thread breaking. It should be ok though with better quality materials. The tricky bit can be holding the steerer tube tightly enough to cut the thread, if you hold the crown in a vice you may well lose a load of paint and if you keep a wheel in the fork you can sometimes twist the legs if they are on the spindly side. Lots of workshops still have the tools but turn down the job because if it goes wrong it is extremely difficult to remedy the situation by offering a new fork as so few people manufacture them now.

Most workshops don't have the tools suitable for cutting threads, they just have the tools suitable for chasing them. If you have to hold forks in vices then the tools are either blunt or are only suitable for chasing. The obvious answer is ask a frame builder- Jacksons list it as a standard option on their pricelist and both Yates and Roberts have done it for me in the past and when I worked in the trade I used to pop down to Helmut at Sonic and borrow his kit.

Someone on here teaches[well works at training place] at a place with cnc mills, I would have thought it would be be easy to do on a horizontal mill[or a vmc if it had enough height].

Last year i had a pair of Manitou 3's cut and threaded by my LBS for just over £18 which i thought wasn't too bad... Recently i enquired in Halfrauds and the guy in there said their price to do them again to fit another bike would be £10. I should have gone there in the first place but assumed they would be dearer, i'm getting them done next week so i'll let you know.

Pete - Tried Jacksons, they can't do it as apparently the steerers are heat treated?, but they can replace the steerer tube for just under £50

Also Tried Mercian, no luck there either :(

Futuredood - its not a high quality fork but i wont find one like it for a good while so I'd rather it didnt get knackered but then.... what point would the fork have in my life I guess :?

Neil - TPI is std 24

Rich - let me know how you get on with that
