Forgotten vows...

I never bother with the lock ring... if there's sharpness or burrs around the valve hole that could be why too, or an absense of rim tape...

cant write any more about this without sounding pornographic

Good grief. I've used prestas for years without issue. Were you using 5psi?

Nope. Over 30psi as always. Perhaps its to do with tightening the lock ring before pumping up the tyre. I'm using inserts too by the way.

Never got on with them really, they always split on me right at the valve stem.

Maybe that is the issue, or you're just unlucky!

Perhaps your tyre is shifting on the rim, pulling on the valve stem.

In which case more air pressure or some tub tape should fix it.

There is still the issue of the tyre slipping under braking. Unless you put like 40/45psi in the tyre. I normally run about 38psi.

I heard about smearing washing up liquid around the tyre bead to stop it moving. Not sure I wanna do that though.

Whats the average psi you guys running in your presta valved tubes then?

EDIT: @ Fingers. Missed your post as I was typing mine. Whats this tub tape then?

Tightening the lock ring before you inflate the tube has no effect on this - in fact, if you do tighten the lock ring first and then pump up the tyre you'll usually find that you can tighten the lock ring a little more, as the air pressure has forced the tube deeper into the well of the rim.

Some makes seem more prone to tearing the valve out (Schwalbe springs to mind) and some tyre/rim combinations seem more prone to "creeping".
Yet another benefit of running tubeless.......
