For Sale For Sale: 1987 Raleigh Royal 531st 60cm frame + fork

Probably going to regret this, but up for sale is my 1987 Raleigh Royal lightweight touring frameset.

Until recently, this was my primary audax / road bike. Lovely compliant 531 Super Tourist tubes, forkblades and stays. For the 1987 model year the Royal was identical to the top of the range Randonneur - aside from the lack of a spare spoke holder on the non drive side chain stay and - in my opinion a more attractive burgundy colour than the gun metal the Randonneur came in. Shimano dropouts, Raleigh engraved seat stays, tidy lugs.

60cm centre of bb to top seat tube.

As you can see in the photos the decals are looking tatty, but the paint is 'useable'. This frame is certainly worthy of respray but could be used as is if you're into 'patina'/originality. The original decals are over the lacquer so could be removed and replaced if you were so inclined. All threads are fine, as is the seat binder. Currently has a Tange Levin headset fitted that could do with a regrease, I can remove if preferred.

Listing here before eventual/inevitable local ads and evilbay rigmarole...

I'd like £75 collected from Bath, Somerset / plus post

I have a RR 1986 (I think) model. Out of interest, did you run a cartridge BB or a cups and axle traditional BB? I tried to put a cartridge BB in mine, but the rivet inside the bb shell for the cable guide was protruding a mm or so. I couldn't be bothered to remove guide and rivet and stuck with the cups and axle.

I was running a Stronglight JP400 in there and didn’t encounter that problem. I guess the body of the bb is narrower than the cups so there is plenty of space to clear a protruding rivet/nut.

I do remember having to locate a shorter bolt to overcome a similar problem when replacing the original cup and cone bb on my ‘88 Cinder Cone, mind you.
