I also rode with someone who is a Brompton world champion.
However, I used my Brompton as a normal commuting bike and then one evening the council used the wrong gritting compound and the bike tried to kill me. After 6000 gbp worth of restorative surgery I have never trusted it again. Give me 27.5 or 29.

Very sorry to hear of your experience with a Brompton.
The Moultons were built for speed, they started out with narrow tyres, the reason they have suspension.
