Fixing a Victorian

I haven’t given up on that pesky pedal. I took a heavy washer and tacked the side of it to some flat stock. 494C790A-432D-47A0-B7BC-E167C64E51D1.jpeg
I filled the washer hole with brazing, banged the tack off the flat stock, drilled a small hole through the brazing, which is softer than weld hardened steel and started using tiny files to make a flat spot. This is going to be long term as I already have an hour of labor into it without much to show. You can only move the files about 1 mm. If I can get this homemade pedal D lock washer to fit I’ll have to grind down the washer diameter and thickness. In the meantime I’ll use the nos pedals. 45D913B2-DAE2-4DF8-AF94-40574E4CCC8C.jpeg

Today I went for a ride to road end at Sand Point in the Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore. Hiking is the only way to go further along the shore. The pesky pedal locked up and came off again. I’m wondering if fixed gear back pressure is having the outboard end dig into the nylon. It was so tight I boogered up a thin wrench trying to get the race off. One more idea to keep that race from tightening up, Permatex High Strength locking compound. A torch will get it off after it dries in 24 hours, but I’m not interested in ever getting it off. So far the seat has stayed put. Yes, I used Silly Putty. 9D87BCD3-1CD4-4594-84F5-5FC0B8072A1F.jpeg
Here is Sand Point today. Grand Island National Recreation Area is in the background. 811B4340-0034-43CC-ACA2-02C0C11951C3.webp

Pedal woes aside....that's a lovely picture 👍
I think the spindle flexes a little as nylon isn’t as hard as ball bearing. When the race digs into the nylon the race must turn a little and slowly gets tight. Lock tight should fix it if this is the problem. It was a nice ride.

Wow. Just look at that. It's so far removed from it's intended environment of wooden boarding, but it still looks fast !

If the inner races are grumpy that won't help either...when you made the washer did you pop the race out and have a look-see? That filler stuff still stuck or has been swallowed by the nylon?
I thinks it keep fiddlin....and you'll get lucky....a little tight or a little loose whatever it needs to be...just not locking up 😁
