Fixing a Victorian

I don't know if you can get it, but one way to do the graphite coating is to use grate polish - it's some kind of graphitey paste.
I looked this product up. I can’t find any except in the UK. So, I will stick to the spray, which I already have. Thanks for the idea.

They are proud of their seat-clusters. But this is for a different bike.

The pedal with the chipped race spins like a top. I hope it lasts awhile. I used Dry Slide on the nylon side, a lubricant from 30 years ago that was developed for plastic bearings. It’s nano balls of super slippery molybdenum disulfide. It takes 1/8 inch ball bearings on the inboard side. I need to make a tall narrow dust cap as the original is missing. It needs to fit through the quill pedal hole and be tall enough to clear the spindle, which sticks out far since there are no ball bearings on the outboard side. Love this. Crossing off one hurdle after another. As they say here "Bon Courage" !!!!

A 1/2 inch copper plumbing end cap fits through the hole in the end of the quill, fits over what remains of the stripped and chippped dust cap threads and is long enough. All I did was make a faux screwdriver slot and tin it with solder. It looks as bad as the rest of the bike, not new, which is what I want. 0575BCC7-5C4D-4297-979D-E7F4BD4CCA97.jpeg 1D88DD72-CB79-449F-9AFE-DEEDD775F6B0.jpeg F82C311E-27D3-433B-86EC-C4FDA1D14DF3.jpeg

It just get's better this! Resourcefulness gone up the dial to the max. The needle is bending.

The pedal with the nylon bearing replacement is slightly loose. I can’t take out all the slack, it binds. There is no end to end play but it moves slightly up and down. It might be in the bearings on the inboard side as this is where I see movement. I got the right number of ball bearings in there, there is no room for another one. This pedal is really pretty toasted everywhere so perhaps the race is worn out. It spins nicely. It’s a little concerning as the slack may cause early wear in the nylon. I have a new set, never used, still in the box, old quill pedals with 1/2 inch threads. They look funny, all shiny like against the rest of this maggot. They are almost identical to the originals. They are the back up plan. It’s 9C but it’s warming up from 8C in the last half hour. It’s calm out. I’m hoping for paint today. Predicted to be 20C this afternoon.

All fingers crossed here for fine paint weather 👍
Is the race in the pedal a push fitted one or is it part of the actual body? Just wondering if you can push in a different race? I think as it stands get on it a ride it for a few miles let the balls create a new face to wear....puts some fresh balls in and clean grease and that will be about all you can do!

Thread on race. I have a different one with an aluminum insert, threaded close to the rolled threaded on the race. If I use Torques Law and thread the aluminum insert onto the spindle the alloy threads should strip to fit the weird rolled threads. It’s a much larger diameter race so a dust cover wouldn’t fit.
