Previous bad experiences I guess..

In my experience, you get a good Vx and it'll do starship mileage with very little maintenance.. but a bad one might send one mental.

a great vx con on diesels

Brother in law drives a Vx diesel a few thousand miles a week for work and it never misses a beat..

My only experience with Vx diesel was an old Isuzu 1.7TD engined Astra.. good engines but a bit old for the purposes in this thread.

variable vane turbo on yours? could just be sooted up and stopping full movement hence the over boost! all that low mileage short low speed trip low and sitting around you do! try a few italian tune ups! or get a turbo cleaning kit and give that a try first before you splash out on a replacement

VW diesels are fantastic engines, you know the rest of the car, it makes sense to repair.

Essentailly, a recon turbo is gonna have warranty, and shouldn't run close to £700. As already said, Turbos a re a simple plumbing job, easily do-able by someone with 5 thumbs.

HTH

I would go with self repair or maybe replacing the bearings in the turbo.
Discs and pads are a easy home DIY job, you can even fashion an "audible run out" tool rather than lash out on a dial guage.

We have a 1998 A6 on 208,000 miles. It still seems to going strong after the usual suspension work. You can't get greener than an old car.
