Make sure the stem is right for the diameter of bar. If it gets stuck on a curvy bit, spin it round (because bent tubes aren't round anymore).
If all else fails, put bar tape on and forget about the scratches you can't see. Mine are scratched up on the panto, but when they're covered by light brackets you get over it.

The Scratcy bit is usually the area around the bolt.........try and always keep this area on an external curve. Wedge something into the bolt area (not a screwdriver) like a wooden or plastic wedge.
Check the stem for sharp edges and use a bit of wet and dry to round off any sharp edges.

my old 3ttt stem has a little bolt which is for opening up the clamp area, expanding it.. Last week fitted a new bar, and it slid through without problem. Actually I like this design, you don't have to use wedges, just turn the little screw with a 4mm allen key until the clamp area is expanded enough for you to slide the bar.

that little screw behind the big one. Just check your stem to see if there's one like that. : ) If not, then wedge and lubricate the clamping area of your stem to allow the bar to slide easily.
