Fitting a 52 teeth crank to my Saracen

Re:

Largest 94bcd ring I have is 46.
I would suggest getting a standard shimano 110 BCD crank if you need a granny ring. If you don't need 24T low gear at the bottom then you could always increase your middle ring to 38/40 and fit a 28T granny.

You'll of course need a bottom bracket to fit the crank as well?

I don't think he means "one piece crank" in the BMX sense, but rather a lower spec square taper crank where the sprockets are riveted to the arms and not interchangeable. I don't recall any Saracens being that cheap as to be fitted with BMX style single piece cranks!

As suggested, you'd be best with a 46t or 48t MTB setup. You can get triple road cranks with a 30t granny and 52t big ring, but the spacing between rings on a roadie is closer than MTB spacing, so your shifter won't work properly and the curve of the front mech will be too tight.

There are some Suntour triple chainsets, four arm, with 48t rings. They seem to be found on lower/ middle range Specialized flat bar road bikes.

My Ridgeback 701LX has a 50-34 front set-up.

No issues with shifting at all, and I could fit an inner ring too if required. I'm using thumbshifters, but there's no reason that an indexed Rapidfire shifter wouldn't also do the job.
Out back I'm running an 11-28 seven speed cassette which, with 26" wheels, gives about 118 gear inches in the 50-11 ratio.

This is actually a bigger gear than the 50-12, with 27" wheels on my road bike. (112.5 gear inches)
