First production mountain bike?

Short stem, wide bars, slack geometry, 1 x drivetrain, longer wheelbase.

Why has it taken so long to finally get back there?

It was marketed as a cruiser, not a mountain bike though, wasn't it? Looks more like a mix between a beach cruiser and an oversized BMX frame.

Also plenty of early ATB's were 1x, pretty much all the ones with one piece cranks were.

Here in Canada it was the RM Sherpa AFAIK.
