I was familiar with THAT photo, but had no idea that was on an individual time trial, and not only did he finish the stage with a double fractured collarbone, but he finished the race, in 3rd!!!...in the year of his retirement, doing climbs like Stelvio en route. I rode the Stelvio a few years ago and the thoight of descending that in a race and braking only with one hand, considering how rubbish brakes were in 1950's, just boggles my mind... and riding tho snow where scores of other riders abandoned. And then sawed his plaster cast off so he could continue training, I mean, wow, chapeau doesn't even begin to cover the epic-ness.
