Hey,

Will be documenting a new project here. Not revealing all details yet, but looking for slighty relaxed - yet mostly period-correct build for a bike to ride, not display-only. Still trying to put enough attention on details for the wow-factor this frame deserves.

Is this a cannondale road frame? That tubes looks a whee bit too skinny for a mountainbike frame. Ans the angle suggests a rather large frame. (or maybe thats just the camera angle.)

No cigars yet. Nor road frames, only some meaty Pepperoni available here From October of 1990...

So... It's a Cannondale SM Series frameset manufactured in Oct '90 - in "Black / Pearl Hyper-Highlight", which was the color for model year 1991 SM1000. Size 20".

It is however missing the SM1000 text on the top tube - either someone has very very carefully been able to remove without leaving any marks, or it has never been there in the first place...

A round of small touch-up painting was just done (with Humbrol Metallics). Almost impossible to match this chameleon blue/black color perfectly, but I'm happy with it - good starting point for the build

As pictured with the headset cups and canti-bosses the frame weighs in at 1750g and the fork at 750g

Without "SM1000" written on the top tube, it's a frameset sold alone. So, you can built it as you want. But if you really want an SM1000, Ritchey parts and Suntour XC comp groupo needed !

Never really considered these earlier frames could have been sold frameset-only as well, similarly as later with e.g. the F-series.

Most probably you are right as I'm 99.9% sure nobody could / would have removed the "missing" SM1000 decals this cleanly.

No Ritchey or Suntour coming in my case, so let's re-phrase the thread to more general SM-series

So... Component wise the plan is to go XT M730, including:

XT Bottom Bracket
XT Headset
XT Thumbshifters
XT Rear and front mech
XT Crankset
XT Cantis + Levers
XT Hubs on Mavic M281 (28mm wide) rims
XT Cassette and chain
XT Platform pedals
XT Quick releases with the fat O-rings - also for the seatpost
XT SharkFin of course as well

Basically the full group excluding the seatpost... That department is still open. I've pretty much got all these XT parts already covered, so the build will start very soon by installing the below shown BB & Headset kit:

...A lot of disassembly, cleaning, greasing, reassembly and installation still to be done!
