Finding out what year etc for a bike

I've been asked to shift a bike for the GF's grandfather. Apparently knowing which bit is the saddle and which are the wheels defines me as an expert

Anyway, other than perusing bikepedia, can anyone offer sage words of wisdom on how to find out the year for the BSO.

Its an old Marin, with what looks like top end components for its age (XT throughout).

Zolatone marin (ie the name of the paint) so that makes it 190-1992 I believe. Reckon its a 1991 but no expert on Marin.

Ahaaa, thats grand thanks. Narrows the search on bikepedia....

i was muttering comments about bashing it out to some student, but that seemed a crime when I felt its weight and saw the running gear.
