Filing spokes on the rim

Hi all,

I recently bought an old Colnago Super which I have subsequently dismantled. I'd like to reuse the wheels but upon removing the tubs I notice that the spoke protrude an alarming amount (+/- level with the rim wall and perhaps slightly proud in places). The bike had clearly done a lot of miles in this condition so I'm not sure how much of a problem it is...

I was wondering if it's necessary to reduce their length slightly to remove the risk entirely and how best to do that - a small file? Grinder?

Is there such a thing that could clip the spoke ends off in situ without removing them? It looks unlikely but though I'd ask

Cheers

Re:

Var used to make an end knipper type cutters .But if you are only doing one set of wheels (if you could find them) would be expensive A small grinding wheel in a Dremel would do the trick. Do your rims have recessed eyelets? you can allow some spoke protrusion on these rims. I always used to plug the eyelets with cork made it nicer for the Tubs or rim tapes to sit on. Dab of Tub cement kept nicely in place

Hi Little Al,

Yes, they do have recessed eyelets but the spoke end is still protruding out of the recess into the 'tyre zone'

Dremel & tiny grinding wheel then + steady Hand
