Fatty headshok as rigid?

In a thread I saw somebody that did that... basically ditched the outer 1.5" tube the linear bearings and the internals and used the inner tube as the steering tube, apparently it's very close to a true 1 1/8" fitting the crown race was a little tricky. basically a straight blade pepperoni fork.

Cheers the other option is a £110 rebuild

What seems to be the problem with the fork? The solution I was referring to was for a 1 1/8" frame if you have a Cannondale frame then it gets trickier (outer tube and inner tube not rigidly connected)
I will take a crack at DIY servicing my wife's '95 Headshok (DD with the Marzocchi recart) soon... scored a cheap NOS damper and air-spring assembly (even got the necessary castle tool)... wish me luck.
