FAT Chance Yo Eddy - sub 19lbs !!!!

M-Power

Old School Grand Master
I remember the weight weenie days all those years ago. Not very mugged up on modern parts but a sub 19lb modern STEEL rig..... that weight in incredible.

What are the other comparable light weight bikes of similar spec ?

On whose scales?
My carbon 29 hardtail, large frame, with carbon bars and crank, 1x11, weighs in at 20.87 lb inc pedals..... therefore i am a slightly sceptical for a steel frame as pictured with pedals, bottle cage and bottle.

As i said im ignorant on modern rigs  The owner has posted pics on FB of the weight which is 19.68kg with pedals. Wonder what steel tubing has been used. Can you see/list the bike spec by looking at it ?

Ouch, i put kg insteaf of lbs!!!

So if you mean 19.68 lb, that is sub 20 lb not sub 19 lbs.

Thats now a difference of 540 g.
I would imagine most of that is in the carbon rim wheels, still seems quite a lot tbh.

Re:

I can remember bitd top end bikes were quoted with actual weights in the mags. These days they seem to omit that detail. Its not the be all etc and i appreciate modern bikes are over engineered to handle the punishments of trail centers and are this heavier etc. I just have no idea of modern top end bike weights. Sub 20lbs was a kind of holy grail bitd. Klein made a big play on that with their Dolomite on a weighing scale at its first bike show unveiling.

FATs were always light and their marketing made a point of being 7oz lighter than a comparable fillet brazed frame but sub 20lbs with a steel frame..... I'm just curious to know what kind of steel, how thin etc

Re:

its interesting, back when light weight was fashionable you have rim brakes and square taper cranks, then bikes got beefed up and teh downhill stuff trickled down, light weight went out the window. disk brakes and bigger spindles etc, now all the xc version of that stuff has got as light as weenie stuff used to be, so high end off the shelf kit is as light at trick aftermarket parts were bitd

eg 15 years ago a weenie crank/bb setup mightve been 550g, 10 years ago truvativ noir mightve been 750g, now that next sl crank on there is probably 550g again, but it has a 30mm spindle and proper bearings. one thing thats gonna be significantly lighter is the wheels, like you can get mtb wheelsets now that weigh down to nearly 1kg, being tubeless will save a bit too.

couple of things about that bike show its not off the shelf though, that kcnc scandium seatpost for one. so basically who knows how much customising has been done and 20lb for a customised hard tail is tank-like.

the frame itself probably isnt all that light. i think old yo eddy used to be like 4lb mark, 1.8kg ish. compared to bonty racelight, 1.7kg or a ritchey p20/p21 nearer 1.6kg. those new richey frames are way chunkier than that. in the age of carbon, who wants a light steel frame? sadly steel frames now are made to be comfy or tough, i'd be amazed if its less than 2kg. in fact steel hasnt got a lot more advanced since the 90s. 853/nivacrom is about as good as it got. dunno what ever happened to aermet, lightest steel frames ive seen were made of that stuff.
