Experience with tyre liners for puncture protection?

Lately I've been looking at options to reduce the chance of punctures on my wife's bike. She'll do the occasional ride alone as the weather gets better and there's no chance of her changing a tube on a ride if she gets a flat - more likely she'll ditch the bike and run home.

She rides on the road only and I'm not really looking for a 'no punctures at any cost' option, like heavy tyres that'll sap the energy and waste her efforts - I've actually just shed a kilogram of rolling weight by replacing the Nimbus Armadillo slicks at 1800g/pr including tubes with Panaracer Paselas - 800g all in. I may still put in those slime tubes, but while changing the tyres last week I came across Zefal tyre liners and gave them a go. They seem to have decent reviews - they seem likely to lower the chance of punctures and I was impressed at how light they are (about 50g/wheel?), cost very little (£8/pair from Merlin), they were a bit fiddly to install but only an extra couple of minutes per wheel. Has anyone used them, successfully or otherwise?

Personally i found them a bit of a bugger to fit - very easy to get a crease in them which can eat away at the tube. I suspect if i was to fit again i'd try and hold them in place with spraymount or something similar. As for slime tubes - i wasn't impressed as i watched green gunk spray out everywhere (and they are damned heavy). Personally i use tyres with some sort of protection built in such as marathons - but usually the folding version as no protection is 100% proof (and folders easier to get off the rim. I've had good experience with the schwalbe marathon supremes (expensive) or the vittoria voyager hypers (cheap from planet x)
