Ever Have This Happen To You?

A nice 97 model Specialized Rockhopper popped up on my local CL last month, I messaged the person that listed it within 30 minutes of the post. Told them I would come buy the bike and they said ok, last minute when I was gonna leave to come get it they say someone else is coming to look at it, then sold it out from under me for 120 bucks. I was pissed, tonight the same bike less then a month later pops up for 450 bucks, double douche baggery right here folks. Here is the bike I speak of,...

Re:

Yup, happened to me plenty! In fact its happened with another member of RB! This member only flips the shiznit out of cheap nice bikes and screws the rest of the community!

It happened to me on another occasion for a $50 bike and I in turn bought it from the flipper( of on RB) for $200 more. Found more $$$ in parts and eventually sold the frame for what I paid!

You win some thou lose some!

yep. get the 'oh, you didn't respond to my messages so i thought you weren't interested' or something similar. no, you decided to sell to someone else, free country thats your choice, but at least man up and say that. tit.
selling on a bargain is all part of the game i guess, but screwing on an agreed sale is just plain rude!

Had that with a car. We had everything agreed, i had to take a day off so I would be ableto get the car that was 3 hours away from me. Half way there my phone rang and that stupid brat ttold me he had. Just sold it to his neighbour. I was so gutted, I really thought about driving there anyway and talk to him in person...

I messaged the current seller and he said that he had the advantage living in the same town, so he was told by the first guy that was selling it about me wanting to come buy it, I live about half an hour away from where it was listed, I did let him know that he would never sell that bike for anything near what he was asking and wished him the best of luck with it. As with all other balloon headed sellers who think they scored a gold mine, I will watch over the next few months as the price keeps dropping lower and lower until he just takes it down and keeps it as that bike sold for less then that when it was new, high end by no means.

Re:

similar happened to me, checked my messages just as I was about to start the hour and a half drive to go buy the bike, the seller had sold to someone who offered cash. I'd also offered cash, but ho-hum, plus the seller said he accepted less than I'd said I would happily pay for the bike  his loss really, just glad I checked my messages before setting off on the drive there!

OP, can you be sure this isn't the same seller selling the bike again at an inflated price? perhaps he had more interest than he let on and decided to up the price and ride his luck?

It wasn't the same seller, The first seller put up one dirty pic of the bike sitting next to the garage, the guy who bought it took about 10 different detailed pictures inside his house and even put up his name "Frank" That's quite ok because today I am quite sure I sniped an absolute steal on a 2000 Marin Eldridge Grade, emailed the guy right after he listed it up. He was a decent person and told me I was first and it was mine, said when I got there that he had four other guys hitting him up pretty adamantly about the bike if I didn't buy it. He held it for me and I scored it for 60 bucks,... bike is absolute mint, be willing to bet money the same goon that bought the Rockhopper was one of those guys. Here she is with new tires, seat, grips, bar ends, full adjustment and detail.
