Re:

There are millions of orphans across the world, and a good number would thrive given the chance to come here.

These problems are really only political.

What party will take the chance of losing the anti immigration vote? They all want a piece of it.

Take a look at this graph in the wiki entry on this. Birth rate drops rapidly as income increase a bit and then goes down more slowly. You propose the reverse is true. Mongolia tried to boost brith rates with payments and medals no less. I dont think it was a resounding success.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Income_and_fertility

I have seen various Wiki graphs too. There's evidence that globally population growth in developing countries is tailing off and others where the opposite is predicted by 2050, the former as people thankfully have an improving std of living. I'd like my kid to grow up in a world of no wars, where all faiths preach tolerance and understanding. Arms dealing and corruption in all countries is under control and developing countries are massively invested in by the richer ones so people can have a good life wherever they happen to be born. Hypersonic jet travel allows us to go to Australia in 2hrs and instant mass communication is a force only for good. Let's hope it happens. Said it before. Maybe this is all just a stressful transition phase to something better.

By 2050 the NHS alone will be gobbling up 25% of England's GDP that is the effect of a aging population.

Come up with another policy.
I would, but I'm not sure RB is ready for it... I can hear the squeals already...

We are getting older. We are living longer. But old people still live in houses. And we don't have enough of them. So I don't see how importing millions of new people ostensibly to help pay for our old age will help when they themselves will require huge investment in housing, education and health.

My plan is to basically not give a ****. I have a house. No children. I take nothing from the state. I'll earn as much as I can, avoid every penny of tax I can and look after myself. I'll leave it for others to fight over the scraps.

Re:

I was under the impression that a lot of older people have to sell their houses to pay for their healthcare.
Bloody people living longer, what an inconvenience!
Bloody immigrant scientists, coming over here and discovering ways how to help us all live longer!
Bloody immigrants, treating us when we're in hospital!
Bloody immigrants, coming over here, doing jobs that SOME laughably called ' Indigenous ' people seem to think are below them.
Bloody immigrants, coming over here, marrying our glorious UKIP leader, and having the cheek to breed more mouths to feed

Yeah! What have the immigrants done for us!

Re:

Sorry, has someone said we don't need immigrants?

On the contrary. Now whilst I believe our feckless and workshy should be forced into work before we import labour it also makes perfect sense to take who we need for the roles our plebs cannot do.

But to leave the door open to everyone in the EU is mental. And it disadvantages those from India, Australia and the rest of the world who don't have the same rights of movement.

The Sun is backing Brexit. The polls are suggesting Brexit. Remain are clearly shitting themselves. And it would be no surprise to me if the prevailing opinion of Retrobike was somewhat at odds with the general population.

A big final push and we really could be out of this. :)

I picked that wiki graph as an example. The trend of declining birth rate with increasing income is well known. I could cite source papers who all of to peruse but it is well established fact. Ss to what happens to population over the next centuary is more uncertain. There are range of answers depending on the assumptions picked about the rate of growth of world economies. Best un estimates show 34% of europes population will bd over 60% by 2050. Europe population wont grow much it might even shrink all the growth in population will be in developing nations. Migration therefore is going to happen on a scale we have not seen yet. No draw bridge pulling will help with this.

The housing problem is easily solved. After the second world war there was a housing shirtage and a rapidly growing population so the state gog to eork a build housing alot if it. Now the government faced with big chamges to the population cant build houses. It has lost the capasoty and while right to buy exist councils havd no incentive to even bother.

No giving a f.... is not the answer. In that world you can trampled on by the have nots. If this referendum teach us anythkng dont ignore those who feel they have lost. The wrecking ball is swinging and different people are pushing it for different reasons in different directions, so what it knocks over is anyones guess maybe even those who dont give a f***

The most important thing about change is it is always uncomfortable and no society is ever in control of it. Thd best you can do is mange the change to limit the impact like building more houses, spending more than 6.46% of GDP on the nhs (that's declining too it was around 9% in the labour years but some of that got wasted on pfi) e.t.c.

Our problems are home gorwn and not imported. We can fix them without withdrawing from the eu. We can fix them out of the eu too but it wont be any easier. Also pulling out opens a can of worms we might wish we had kept closed, its that wrecking ball again it will swing in directions we cant predict.

Also why should we try to swap eu migrants for indian or aussie ones. What is the obession with migration from the commonwealth. I mean they may not want to come here. Also people forget if cheaper east eurpean migrants had not come to work and set up business then the jobs they filled might not have been filled at all or evn have been opened. Business wont just employ anyone. They employ those who add valve and controling cost is important too. Limiting a buskness wage bill is critical. Profit margins in many sectors are being squeezed. The online retail industry works on a 2 to 3% profit margin. Comtroling every cost is important. If wages go up prices do to and when it comes down to it nomone wants to pay.

Re:

Of course, it's also an open door for Brits to live anywhere in mainland Europe, as many do, also as one of our own has indicated may happen, should people vote for what I think would be a very bad decision, leaving.

Staying in is the lesser of two evils IMO, voted now.

Thanks for your input chaps ;) regardless of your views.

No hard feelings, lets get back to bike talk!

It's really not. Between the green lobby/EU not wanting them on greenbelt, the nimby's not wanting them anywhere and the Tories not wanting to collapse the price of existing owners values/BTL rents it's far from easy. And that's before we consider the resources required. Government likes doing easy things, like raising tax on fags or petrol, that's easy. Building millions of houses? Not so much.
