Thanks for the advice and pics. I am going to digest and think what I really need. To summarise it seems with a standard rear mech and front double I can have a 38/28 combo or 35/28 with a Triomphe/Victory crankset. With SPA and Rally long cage 34/32. Other wise go for a triple.

Apologies for being pedantic but a Campag double can only take a 39 not a 38.

If you fancy something really obscure, a Victory Leisure rear derailleur will take a 30 tooth sprocket.

On the subject of Victory / Triomphe cranks, I'd recommend going for the Victory. Bizarrely, given that they were made in the same year, they don't take the same bottom bracket. Victory goes on a standard 111 mm symmetrical axle, whereas Triomphe has the same offset axle that Gran Sport and Nuovo Record had. Campagnolo still make a 111 mm Centaur bottom bracket, which is handy.

And, if you haven't fallen off your chair with Victory based excitement already, Mercian cycles have all of the parts necessary to convert a standard Victory rear derailleur into the hill-friendly Leisure version. I am sad enough to have done it

Cromoman, not pedantic at all. That is why I asked the question here - I know I will get helpful and knowledgeable answers, not opinions and even a dumb question is treated with respect and good humour.

I am still on my chair and had a look on Velobase at the Leisure option. I also see the Victory crankset uses a 116bcd and found Miche make small chainrings with that bcd. So all I need now is to find a crankset or groupset and contact Mercian. Although, I have seen a device called a Goat link which extends the rear mech connection to the frame and increases the capacity of the largest rear sprocket which might be worth a try.

PS. When I worked in a QA role I was promoted from nit-picker to pedant, such a proud day :?

the Goat Link (and other similar ideas) will enable you to engage a larger sprocket so that the jockey wheel doesn't foul the cog by moving the mech further away from the cogs, but you may still need a long arm mech to cope with the slack needed to handle the variation in gears.

I am looking at a Colnago frame being offered here with a 130mm drop out (OLD). I realise this can be cold set, but would prefer to avoid this. This frame would be suited to an 8 speed cassette on a freehub wheel. Can the Victory rear mech be used with an 8 speed cassette?

I think the early 80's Sugino VP and GT cranks are 110 BCD and would get you a nice low front end.

All of those will look very age appropriate and the latter two will allow you to go with much smaller rings than a traditional 110 bcd touring crank.

I've not done it myself but I have seen it done. I think it might require a bit of filing!

Well despite the good advice here, I have tried to go along the Campagnolo Record route as I thought I had done well finding an adapted chainset with a 32 t Stronglight 90bcd small ring. I also have a Victory triple front mech and a Chorus 8 speed rear mech. The really elusive item is a bottom bracket to suit the Record triple. Velobase says it is a 117mm long with offset and these seem impossible to find. Campagnolo say use a 70 SS 120 X3 which is actually 122 mm long. I have found the X3 in the States but the cost to import is prohibitive. Any suggestions of a suitable BB or does anyone have the Road X3 axle to sell?

I can get you a Miche Team 68/122 (presume it’s British) ISO BB? Not Campagnolo quality but the right size and it’d only be £18 plus postage.

You could also put on one of the those Velo Orange 50.4 bcd cranks with a 46/30 set of rings. IRD sells a similar vintage looking one as well with a different BCD.

Some very good advice here, I'm using a similiar setup on a rather special tourer - Campagnolo* chainset (48/3 with Suntour Cyclone mechs and gearlevers.

I don't like triples.
