In all seriousness though when my wife needs a new dog walking van it's likely that electric will be a serious consideration as her mileage per day is low and charging it will only ever be overnight so a small Nissan NV or the Vauxhall (her current old combo is pretty much perfect for the role) will be candidates, for the longer range stuff and towing i'll be waiting much longer to replace my L200. As for the Impreza the only things that's replacing that is a Griffith 500!

Yes, except that the only shifts that are allowed to occur are in the direction of more technology, more surveillance, more speed, more data, more pollution, more resource extraction, more inequality.

I found the book Factfulness a good check on the idea the world is going to hell in a hand basket. We've living longer, healthier, peaceful and generally more rewarding lives than anytime in human history. Some of that is coming at great environmental cost (and possibly other societal costs too) - and we need to get our collective heads around that and sort it. Data and technology can sometimes help with that.

Now that is what I call cognitive dissonance. I think I'll leave you techno-optimists to it.

I'm under no illusion about electric vehicles, however it's pretty difficult to swim against the tide when the tide is swamping you.

The fact is that she won't need a new van for at least 2 years and by that time the tax on a small ICE van is likely to be pricing us towards electric, that and the fact they are mostly derv (well they were when we bought the last one) with hideous features like DPF and Ad-blue systems that don't take kindly to short journeys (especially DPF's) means that they will not be suitable for the job with electric being better.

You miss the point entirely. A petrol or diesel X3 of comparable spec to the launch edition iX3 is well in to the 50k bracket before going bonkers with options so the electric one is within a few options of the standard car of similar spec.

It's cheaper than it's direct rivals from Audi, Merc and Jag so you would imagine they will react.

If this vehicle can get close on price and range to the fuel version when only a year or two ago the electric versions were vastly more expensive then it stands to reason some one should be able to make a van in the next couple of years that competes on price and range with the fuel version and wasn't that the point of the thread?

The price doesn't matter but the fact the range for big cars (so vans....) is quickly improving while the price difference between petrol/diesel and their electric equivalent is narrowing. It'll be the same for small cars, medium cars and vans before long.
 
Pricing :? Need I point you all again at a certain thread discussing the disparage of Electric bikes ;)

But I think we need not worry too much, as in this day of hard competition, many manufacturers,looking to undercut their competitors, the price though initially high will come down considerably.

It's the price of electricity we all need to start worrying about :shock:
