eshhh; don't remember the midwest being so dog eat dog; sounds like a bike shop owner I know here in nyc.

Not possible. No one like this guy.

The guy I'm speaking about ran four bike shops in the bronx and a neighboring town out of business, two of which were authorized GT dealers bitd.

All the blame doesn't lie squarely on his shoulders, but he played a major role. Shame since these other bike shops offered food/drinks/entertainment/group rides. He barely offers you a chair anymore :(

'Entertainment' :D

Now theres a bike shop a I'd like to go to! ;)

seriously, like movies and bands; had a couple of couches...people would just hang out.

but I digress...this thread has gone way off topic

There are a few amazing horder shops in Japan. Mostly people whose families had land postwar, then sold it off to huge profits in the 70s-80s. Zephyr Cycles is gone now I think, but them and Pegasus produced bikes (well, I think Zephyr had them built by Toei, Pegasus (Jingane) is a proper builder, and their bikes cost about 9 grand). Each bought massive amounts of stock to keep their customers happy for decades. There are a couple shops like that that don't also do frames as well.

As a result you can still buy pretty much anything needed for rando's in mint/NOS shape. Usually at the same prices they were way back when. So not necessarily cheap, but not exorbitant either. That includes some cross over stuff too, though. I've bought plenty of track/keirin stuff and XC Pro doodads there over the years.
