eBay and the silly prices

Hello!

Not sure if this is the right thread. There are some absolute lovely bikes on ebay but what people are asking for them is silly. Some run of the mill Raleigh 531 full bikes some at £750 with full Shimano 600. Im no expert on the value of these bikes but some are pushing 30 years old. On an auction the market will usually find what an item is actually worth. Is there a large case of people always thinking what they have isnt worth what they think?

I agree that these are high numbers but anything is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. There seem to be enough old men my age and above with pension lump sums who are willing to pay a lot for the bikes they once dreamed of. Same goes for cars- check out Ford Escort MK 1 & 2s which you can see asking prices up to £50K or more for FFS!!!

I think my car is worth a cool 100k, but the market might (will) pay a miniscule fraction of that

They are buy it now prices with no offer option. I think people equate what they spent to what its worth. With alot of retro restorations you should really do it out of love since its unlikely youll get a return on the money spent.

There’s a bottom of the range very basic & scruffy Claud Butler Cresta that’s been on for ages at £999... :facepalm:
Makes me smile every time I see it.. today a much better version of the same bike didn’t sell for £75... :roll:
I’ve got a feeling the £999 may well stay unsold for a very long time!

I’d hazard a guess that some folk see the demand for bikes as a result of lockdown, and the inability of shops to keep up with demand, as a way of making a few quid from the bike that’s been sat festering at the back of the shed for the last few years.
