Single speed= sacrilege in my book but if I had a decent modern bike to ride seriously I could see the point in having a pub bike with single speed that wasn't a thief magnet

Yeah, I assumed so. Not going to be a weenie build this one!
Weighed it. My 1990 Tufftrax is 29 pounds in it's singlespeed spec. So well over 30 pounds with gears.

anyone know the headset size of a 1989 TuffTrax? 1"?
I forgot to check my 1989 Tufftrax. I think it is a one inch headset.

As long as the frame isn't altered and you can put the gears back on then I've no issue with the odd single speed or two.
Hopefully my 1990 Tufftrax is so rusty, pink and gear deficient that no serious thief would consider it. I might have to take the Brooks saddle off it though.

Re:

I've got an 89 Tufftrax in the shed and I'm going to single speed it too. Safety in numbers dude :)

The horizontal drop outs are perfect and I just want it for the pub / town / station. I'll keep and clean up the gears so I can reinstate them if I change my mind.

Hard thing was finding a single speed chairing at 110 BCD. Ended up buying a Surly one which was not exactly expensive but cost 50% more than I paid for the whole bike!

Re:

Hmmm be careful on the headset - might be wrong but think my 1990 Traverse Comp is 1 1/8. I'll check in the garage later and report back.

Edit: it is 1 1/8

Re: Re:

Hey Rod, Got any pictures of your Traverse Comp? Not seen many Traverse's on here.

Been busy with the house this year but had some time to clear out the garage over the break, so could get to mu favorite bikes, just need to fit the DX front brakes to the kili and it is done. Then when time allows start on the Trekkers.
