Early Saracen Lovers Anonymous......

It's a bit rough around the edges but it's all original except for the saddle/seatpost and front wheel which is a mavic/WTB combo. I bought it at a Vintage commercial transport rally which my Cycle club displays at. One of the members had it in the back of his car and knew I would want it... Not like me at all ;) . As I only went for the day in my car my friend who displays has it in the back of his box trailer and is going to bring it through this week. Pics to come :D ...

Sounds like you got a bit of a gem even if it is a little rough around the edges and how you came by it certainly sounds like a set up   ..

Re:

Hahaha, I walked into the park where we display and saw it, pulled the money out my wallet didn't even say hello  . The group set will look good with a nice polish and de grease, the paint is rough so I might have a go at spraying it myself as I have just bought a compressor. I will start a build thread next week when I get some photos :D .

Well you've certainly got my attention especially now that your talking about using an air gun and as you probably know it's all about preparation and keeping things tidy and that includes your spraying besides the equipment ;) ..

Yes it certainly sounds like your heart over ruled head if you got your money out that quick
 ...

Yeah I went into a panic as I thought someone else would get there before me  . He thought it was nothing special and many did the people there also, no one seemed to notice it all day  .

It's a black enamel frame so I'm starting out simple I did fancy spraying my Dave Yates in my sig but it needs new cable guides so I thought I might as well get it sprayed whilst it is there getting repaired, also I want it in deep metallic purple so I think I'll start simple and work my way up. It also gives me the excuse to buy a lug lining pen  .

I'll start a build thread next weekend as It'll be getting a good clean :D .

Yes that sounds about right as their has always got to be something looking almost over the top in order for it to grab a lot of peoples attention  as people tend to be a bit like magpies with shiney stuff catching their attention 1st :? .

I just love metallic purple although Jaguar used one many years ago which was actually known as Amethyst and just looked amazing and i'd personally would use a white primer under the Metallic Purple if you don't fancy the idea of it looking really dark .

I've always fancied the idea of doing three sections of different primers on the bike such as ,
Forks n head tube in Black Primer .
The main frame tubes in Grey Primer .
Then the remaining Stays n drop outs in White Primer ..

Then paint top coat as normal .

It would be ashame to tinker with the paint work on your Dave Yates unless your planning on something similar ..

Re:

Yeah, I really fancy a metallic purple. The paint isn't original on the Yates and the current paint is rough on it so I think it deserves a paint and a tart up.

The Saracen is a black enamel so it will be a nice job to start on and also I can practice lug lining. I'll get it up and running first and then start doing some research on getting it sprayed up.

First proper outing on the recently finished kili racer today:

More pics in the thread in my signature.

Well you just have to remember that metallic paints tend to be more expensive than standard base paints as you've got your lacquer to put over the metallic and not forgetting this stuff is always needed http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5L-Universal- ... e7e8fadd1..

So if the Yates is as bad as you say then i'm surprised it's been waiting as long as it has before getting to grips with it and as for the decals on the saracen's future purple paint finish i'd just have to have silver as you'd be hard pressed to find a more complementary colour match with metallic purple ..
