No the original paint could not be saved as the seatpost had been removed with caustic soda (you know all about that) and the paint was all gone from the back of the seat tube.
I still have a few parts to get, and for a number of reasons I won't be able to start work for a couple of weeks, but it is nice to have it back and however good the finish looks in the photos, it looks better in the flesh.
