Early Dave Lloyd

I have a real soft spot for Dave Lloyd frames, I already have two of his mtb's and have been looking for a Concept90 for a while, so when I saw Dave Lloyd in the classified titles, I opened that advert right smartly.

What I found was not a Concept90, but it did appeal, was made of 531 throughout and was in my size, so a purchase was made.

I'd say this is one of Dave's earliest frames, and most likely made by Argos in Bristol. It is also a perfect frame on which to base my 1970's clubman's bike that I have been threatening to build (on another frame) for something over a year now.

The frame needs a respray as the previous owner had to remove a stuck seatpost using the caustic soda method. That suits me as I am not keen on purple, even though this frame is actually a really nice shade. Anyway, I shall speak to the nice folk at Argos about a suitable replacement, which will be the first task, and in the meantime I'd better start building up the wheels.

Plus, some of the other bits, a real deliberate collection of all sorts, from the late 1970's.

This is not going to be a fast build, but I'll keep the thread up to date.

Looks like mid 70's with the long ( pre portacatena) dropouts, graceful fork rake, cinelli mc style fork crown and the complete inability to decide what to braze on lol

Nice find and good luck with the build, I have a similar LLoyd but in 753. Nicely detailed frame and beautiful smooth ride. I shall watch your build with interest.
One quick question about your crankset. I have one exactly the same and don't know which model it is. Do you know?

Cranks in the pic are Campagnolo Nuovo Record Strada with Super Record chainrings. There should be some numbers / length etc stamped on the back of yours which give the date of manufacture.

The length is 170 and the number on the back, within the diamond is an 8.

I'm presently considering keeping the colour. I can't figure out if it is viola or flam viola, but it's a really nice shade and it's rather growing on me.

There is a very similar frame to mine on eBay right now. It is a 1980 model, so has braze on shifter bosses and brake cable guides.

I dug the Mavic Module E rims out today and I'm now working out spoke lengths. I'll get them on order shortly and with luck I'll be able to get the frame into Bristol in the next two weeks, hopefully by the time it gets back the wheels will be built and I'll be ready to start assembly.

I may cheat a little, and get Argos to put some shifter bosses on... I haven't decided yet, as part of me wants to keep it completely original looking, after all, that's the whole point of the build really, to make a bike Shaun thinks he might have seen back in the late 70's. :mrgreen:
