Forms a fillet rather than a butt joint, so possibly more torsional strength.
Is that the case? I always thought capping a tube or any box section it would do the oppositeForms a fillet rather than a butt joint, so possibly more torsional strength.
That makes sense to me, filling and filing would make it more rigid..perhaps..?I wonder this too imlach.....the extra weight of leaving dropout oversize compared to filling the open end of tube and filing dropout flush is kinda negated.....I wonder if it allows the tubes to have more flex torsionally and give more of a compliant ride?
By filling flush you will lose six small fillets of braze on the outside of the dropout/fork end so you could be losing 50% of the strength and more prone to stress fractures. Coming from the aircraft industry René Herse would have been well aware how important strength in highly stressed areas is over beauty. There are some striking similarities between the two, the lugs are short point with a side cut or mouth... could it be a René Herse or definitely in the style of...I can only assume strength.
Good info cheers mate, always like learning stuff about frame making, let it brew in my head for the next 30 years and then I will make my debutBy filling flush you will lose six small fillets of braze on the outside of the dropout/fork end so you could be losing 50% of the strength and more prone to stress fractures. Yeah I get that.. but still I look at how proud the dropouts are left....I still see atleast a 1mm shave on the dropouts outer edge that wouldn't go near the tiny fillet puddle.on four dropouts gotta be another 15- 20 grams of steel.... Which is a fair chunk!
