Dual brake levers

Hi, I’m just going through my 81/2 Galaxy trying to get to know things and generally making it road worthy..

I’m looking at the brake levers and asking why is one set up differently than the other??

See pic, which is correct??

1 is correct. Two is to let you open the caliper and get the wheel out with a wider tyre.

Basically a qr for levers..

When you press the brake lever hard in pic 2 it should click out into the correct position automatically.

Yes it does , ingenious design.
Out of pure interest, I have read that the secondary levers are not popular, I do use them but do waggle a bit.

Can they be restored, they don’t really appear to come apart easily.

With that design the secondary lever is held on the centre spindle by a rivet rather that the large headed screw used in earlier models. Once you take the lever off the bars and remove the clip and fastening screw you can push out the spindle and secondary lever assembly.

The secondary lever had the nickname suicide levers.

Yes I believe they have been referred to like that, I think their true function is probably just to scrub of speed, not fully brake.
