Last pace frame (RC300) before the move away from sq tubing, decent 100mm travel pace forks pre DT, then the rest 2012 componants. Perfect mix for me!

I was looking at a retro bike earlier someone had restored but they had changed it to a single speed. What are single speeds all about? Makes the bike lighter... But one gear must be hard work?

A singlespeed makes life much easier; you only have to worry about keeping your speed up. No gear changes to worry about; you're in the wrong gear 90% of the time so just get on with it.
Give it a go- I know you're curious . You'll either love it or hate it.
If you love it you will get fitter than ever before and scare the bejasus out of riders on carbon sussies.

I like the retro mountain bike thing because that's where I really founded my cyclist side in my 20s. But I love to ride with a great group of roadies and on the road, I adore modern bicycle technology. My Cannondale Evo weights under 14 pounds as you see it here. And it shifts SO fast it's dumbfounding. At speed, the wheelset really shines with its aerodynamic properties.

I've got a modern bike that I love to ride.
Bought a whyte 146 after demoing one for a weekend.
Makes everything great to ride, loads of feel and feedback and confidence inspiring.
Still have the old stuff to look at and ride from time to time but the whyte is and will be for a while, bike of choice.

I own two bikes.
A 2010 Yeti as-r with 4 ins of travel and great geometry.
It is the best bike I have ever riden,period.
And a 1993 Merlin Titanium with Manitou Mars up front.
It rides well and is a great hard tail.
If I am brutally honest the Yeti beats the Merlin in just about every way in terms of riding,handling and comfort.
But for some reason whenever I ride I go straight for the Merlin almost every time.

Got a bit of a mix as well, the oldest being my 91 Cannondale Best of the East hardtail, the newest is a Lapierre X-control full susser i brought new in janurary,

Its my first full suspension, and I love the little french wh*re to bits, but wasn't until i started customising it that it really became mine...and my stuffed back loves it too

I cant find anything in the rulebook that says i cant be in love with my old hardtail bikes and my new bike at the same time

I have no issues with modern road kit as the geometry suits my riding.

Looking at the more leisure orientated market, road stuff also has the startled deer look - any aero advantages made by the equipment immediately lost by the bolt upright rider.

I no longer comment on modern MTB, it would take up too many pages of the internet.

No modern MTB at the moment, I'm quiet happy with my "do it all" Ti-fat fitted with Magura HS brakes. Isn't that far off from modern hardtail IMO. I do have latest plastic road bike though and I think it's fantastic. Road stuff seems to drag in more people nowadays and MTB loosing edge a bit.

Yep, treated myself to a 2010 Voodoo Canzo, several reasons, I've wanted a Full Susser for ages after playing on my Sons Giant Yukon FX3, and this one presented good value for money with some quality components. Lovely to ride and good fun to throw about, very robust. But totally different to my Retro rides. Nothing wrong with a bot of modern in the mix
