Do you think this is a Raleigh frame? Its been resprayed..

If anyones interested i finished this bike and its a lovely retro ride! And now my wife can keep up and manage the hills of Bristol alot easier happy days. Hopefully the paint lasts a few years with a 2k clear.

Im still not 100% it was a raleigh and not a falcon 531 but still not a super original project anyway. 20210722_220813.jpg

Well spotted that was for a few rides but I switched it for an old 46t stronglight (on the other pic) to see if it was nicer to ride. Its got a 13-28 7 speed on it so i thought the 48t might not be that different to my 11-28 8 speed with a 44t but it was a bit different... might pair that sakae 48 with a 14-32 or similar.

That isn’t a Raleigh - the stay caps and bottom bracket are all wrong. Still a nice frame though.
Yeah I figured its a Falcon san remo or similar. From other threads with pics of bb. If the adhessive on the head badge fails I will give a it a falcon one.

Did you get the frame modified, I see that the rear brake cable guides are now on the underside of the top tube, similar to some Raleigh models..?

Yeah they had some some rust and flaky paint in and around so i took them off with a small hacksaw and filed the bump off before a shoeshine. I put new ones on the under side just using a map torch and some silver flo 55. I also took off the left downtube braze on. Just aiming for a clean and simple look before painting

Hi all,

Its a nice small frame (49cm) that I'm planning on modding for my wife to ride. Will give it a proper clean up and respray in spring.

Its got no head badge. The couple I got it from didn't really have any info other than they though it was a 1987 Raleigh road bike of some sort and maybe reynolds frame based on what the previous guy said and that the same previous owner had had it re finished.
It is most definitely NOT a Raleigh, because the seat stay caps do not come close enough to the top tube to qualify. The seat stay caps terminate in the middle of the seat tube, and this is something that Raleigh/Carlton never built.

I own 25 Carlton/Raleigh bicycles, all with 531 tubing (most are rescues), spanning from 1950-1978, and although this is a slightly later early 1980's frameset, the seatstay cap treatment is not something that Raleigh (or Carlton) would ship.

Raleigh started using Gipiemme dropouts in the early 1980's, but when they started, the bikes had scalloped seatstay caps, not flat ones like this.

If it _were_ a raleigh, evidence would come from having 3 telltale holes in the head tube for the raleigh heron badge. You may have to shine a light down the headtube to see the perforations on the inside of the tube, if they had been filled in a previous repaint.

If it _were_ a raleigh, the serial number on the bottom bracket would be of the form WxNNNNN signifying "made in worksop", "fortnight" = x, "frame number" = NNNNN. Also the stamps for this bike's serial number are heavier than worksop letters/numbers.

Best wishes and good luck!

Thanks systembuilder, its long finished and being used by my wife now!

I think in hindsight it is a late 80s Falcon san remo or similar. Has all the same details and serial format as this: https://www.roadbikereview.com/threads/can-anyone-confirm-model-name-on-1988-falcon-531c.366144/ maybe if the badge falls off or i can solvent it off without killing the paint i'll stick a lloyds Falcon olympic badge on it with a light clear coat top up.

Thanks
