Do you think this is a Raleigh frame? Its been resprayed..

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and not a huge expert. Just after someone more experience than me to help identify this road bike I picked up maybe its possible by features and lugging style alone...

Its a nice small frame (49cm) that I'm planning on modding for my wife to ride. Will give it a proper clean up and respray in spring.

Its got no head badge. The couple I got it from didn't really have any info other than they though it was a 1987 Raleigh road bike of some sort and maybe reynolds frame based on what the previous guy said and that the same previous owner had had it re finished.

Not sure what's original and what's not. When I got it had:

Mavic wheelset with 6 speed shimano freewheel
Shimano 105 rear derailleur
Campagnolo veloce front derailleur
Galli (indexed right) braze on shifters
Cinelli short 1a stem
Cinelli giro d'italia 42 handlebars (26.4)
Stronglight 100 46/32 crankset
Not sure what the brake calipers are (shimano 105?)

Seems a bit of a mixed bag but not bad components.

The rear dropouts have something engraved on them.. gipiemme?

Rear derailleur hanger is part of the frame and it has the little chain holding tab inside the seat stay.

theres a model stamp under the bottom bracket 1004 or 7004 the might be more under the cable guide i'm not sure.

The headtube is really short and its pretty light roughly 9kg all in before i took the chain etc off (some kind of chromoly). Which makes it more suitable for my wife.

I thought from looking around a bit it might be a Raleigh road ace but I'm not sure if they made a 49cm?

Anyway I put a 7 speed freewheel on it will play around with a washer or two see if i can get it working smoothly. Sr sakae 46 single crank and its going to have shorter reach bars and maybe some stem clamped shifters with cable stops on the downtube bosses and some more modern brake levers.

It would be nice to know what is is/was.

Any help would be much appreciated!

If I read correctly Gipiemme rear dropout, which suggests Italian. So too the Galli-badged shifters. Have you checked the bottom bracket? Measure across the shell for starters - if 70mm then it's Italian and definitely not a Raleigh.
It has nice detailing - the brake bridge and fork shoulders look classy.
I also thought that Raleigh riveted their head tube badge - are there any signs of filled holes?
 
Its almost definitely a Raleigh. The better frames of the late 80s/ early 90s had Gipiemme drop outs, the seat cluster fits as does the chain hook on the right side seat stay and the fork crown. Looks like the 531c model as the 531 Lux and the 653 ones has a Cinelli bottom bracket shell.

One thing to note was raleighs of the late 80s seemed to have larger than normal air holes. The forks used to hum once you got up to a certain speed

Cheers for replies.

The bottom bracket shell is 67/68mm. The headtube doesnt seem to have rivet holes but i havent taken the forks out to feel the inside. I have an adhesive raleigh headbadge i got for a winner in also doing up but its too big for the gap between the lugs of the short headtube..

That and the strange serial number on the bottom bracket made me unsure. Hence asking on here... i was thinking it was a raleigh road ace before but not so sure now.

Wow! I didn't realise they all did that! I always assumed it was the underside of the steerer
