Thank you Bryan your comments are much appreciated, but at the end of the day, we're not special people, just regular Joe's doing a job which most people could do if they tried it. I think the hardest part is having the patience to deal with the mental side of things, but that doesn't make us special.

On the plus side I'm just about to get paid for sleeping, which is nice.

People that don't wear helmets are simply not riding properly
When your on the ragged edge like me, you fall off alot. Well i do anyway
I came off at Cwmcarn last year on a night ride and landed on a rock at speed, helmet cracked down the middle, and mild whip lash.
If i wasn't wearing it i would be a vegatable now.
Again, Mountain mayhem last year, whilst "on the edge" crashed and slid on my helmet/shoulder and again helmet cracked.
So, you see guys, if you ride properly, use a lid.
Time to " Man Up" and stop fannying about with no lids :roll:

I didn't say you were special, I try not to say that. I used to think it was nice once, but have since learned it's not as good as it sounds:

I have never ridden my bike so hard that I will almost certainly fall off. You don't win races by sitting on your arse watching the rest of the world (and his dog) ride past. To finish first... and all that. So to say if you don't fall off you arn't trying is not the route most would take. I know it is a very famous quote but we all know what happened to the chap who said it don't we?

That said I do wear a lid. Offroad 100% of the time. Onroad all winter and a goodly part of the summer. As said before rojo, it makes good sense to wear a helmet, they have weighed less than 6oz for years and just may save you from a messy end.
I like wearing gloves too. Like Chris667 said Carrati always made reasonbly priced gloves although I like the sound of those Specialized ones. Can't type any longer. The McEwan's Champion has me in it's grasp!

I do hope though it remains my decision and not some spin doctor's sound bite.

I started wearing gloves after a crash that left me picking grit from both my palms with a needle. It took about 2 hours and lots of pain.

I've always worn a helmet especially after what happened to my dad. He was knocked off his bike on the road (he was wearing a helmet) and when he showed me his helmet it had a hole in it at the temple almost all the way through. If he hadn't been wearing the helmet it'd be his head with a hole in it!

Ha ha! respect as I do have the hole in the head after an off - its the bit that was superglued together - I had concussion for a while.

My trundelling through the countryside for the last 19 years hasnt required a helmet - now I'm just paranoid...

Have a look at Specialized body geometry gloves, they're built up with specific padding to stop pressure on the nerves and have helped for me on the road bike.

Could do I suppose... It's a good few years back since last time I tried Specialized gloves. But seriously, I have tried every major brand going and some of the less-well known. At the moment I use Roeckl as they are the ones I can keep on for longest.

I think the problem is the tightness around my knuckles. Next attempt will probably be a full finger MTB specific glove.

Once the gloves come off, my hands go back to normal for a couple of hours. Probably should see a doctor about it... but it's not exactly a life-threatening disease is it?

Spot on LGF. In reality it all depends on what sort of riding you do.

I smashed my head and helmet on a descent at the Malverns But I like to belt down descents when I'm not racing too, so I guess there's the same chance of coming off. I wouldn't dream of riding at Afan without a helmet.

That said, does trundling around the countryside require a helmet ? I was doing this as a kid without a helmet, so unless my balance has deteriorated over the years, I should be able to do it now without a helmet

Maybe I just fall off too much that's why I like to wear a helmet.

i wear gloves for comfort.

helmet wearing started to get a bit lax until my mate got knocked off his bike - i quickly reverted back to wearing it all the time.

i cant see that it matters what sort of riding you do. it doesnt make sense to me to wear one off road but not on? there are lots of idiot (and unattentive) motorists out there)

i respect peoples decisions so i am not about to preach to people, i just dont get it thats all
