Do all cable disc brakes use V brake levers?

title says it all really - given they are a recent addition to bikes I assume the cable pull for all discs is the same as V brakes?

considering a disc brake kitted tandem and would be looking to swap out the changers to a Shimano V brake / shifter combo

Why cable? Shimano hyraulic for £40 new, youd need a longer rear hose.

Deore hydraulics, 80-90 quid a pair, really long rear hose plus fittings and a bleed kit, 20 quid.

Decent (i.e. tandem friendly/practical) cable discs are going to be 60-70 quid plus levers at 20-30 quid.

My reading of the OP is that LittleSkink wants to use STIs so needs to know if cable discs will be compatible.

So, so long as you buy mtb calipers not road ones then yes they will be.

That said, hydros and separate shifters > cable discs and STIs any day of the week.

If you'll be touring on the tandem and are worried about reliability, how likely are you to find a tandem length rear brake cable in the back arse of nowhere?

the situation is we are looking for a family tandem and have been selling stuff to build up a fund to purchase, right now s/h prices are little high but will drop once the summer is over

anyhow, the bikes we like the look of have mechanical discs (which is great) but are gripshift (which I really dont like). I already have two nice Shimano shifter combos from old mountain bikes, one Canti brake and one V brake, so would be doing the swap at no cost

If the kit I have wouldnt work I would have to budget in, and start looking for, shifters as well - sounds like that wont be an issue
