Re:

Just get one of these removal chaps for an easy life – around a tenner, couple of taps and out they come. Applies even pressure and avoids damaging the cups and a lot of cursing. Used it a lot.

Re:

Removal.

The DIY refitting option: a light smear of oil inside the headtube, some padding over the cups, then a few light even taps to gently ease it in.

Re:

I made up a clamp using 3mm thick washers bought off ebay for £1.42 delivered and some scrounged threaded bar and nuts. Fitting one cup at a time and I couldn't believe how easy it went, felt quite plesed with myself.

So much so I now intend to fit a headset to my other bike as the new cartridge bearing types are so much smoother than the old cup and bearing one I have fitted - and I have the tool to do it :)

I bought the washer nuts and thread DIY thing already from eBay, and it just about works but it's a pain, leans to one side and all kinds of trouble. I've also hammered previous ones yeas ago, not so bad with mid school BMX's but faced with a 3.5lb Alloy tourer frame I splashed out on a proper press from Wiggle. Didn't fit the headset though as plot twist I had a commuting road accident a few days later! Doh! I've later used it on my Santa Cruz Bullit and it works great, less faff and stress, should have bought it years ago, love great proper tools!
