Disney Florida Holiday - pointers? I am home - update

Re: Disney Florida Holiday - any pointers?

Thanks for that - I had completely forgotten and the pics!

On the pics front - should I get a video camera? I currently have a small camera which just about works, should I invest in something better?

Re:

You can buy it over there if you check out prices on the net.
Given the cost that that holiday is costing you (just getting in Disney being the price of a nice retro titanium complete bike). Buy something decent.
We used our trusty Panasonic TZ5. Its getting old but still takes lovely pictures and good enough movies.
Plus it's compact with a decent zoom. Newer editions are even better.

Or if you don't plan to shop straight away (we didn't do any of that other than Pubixs shopping for food) then buy now while you remember.
Compact, easy to charge, good zoom.

Re: Disney Florida Holiday - any pointers?

I have been given advice on a waterproof GoPro which looks great but it is costly. Maybe I should bite the bullet and spend some money! I have a small camera but it is a bit dodgy when using the zoom.

Hard to know about all this stuff when you have no idea - like me! Bit like computers.

Re:

Do you need to video things?

I just took good old photo's, much easier to reminisce then watching videos.
The odd short video on the camera of the kids doing things and that's it.

Can't see the point of videoing yourself on the rides when they are on YouTube anyway.

Of course each to their own. I prefer to look around me than through a video lens. I prefer to create nice photographs, as they can be done quickly and then get on with the holiday.

Still if you plan to use it on your bike afterwards, then its a good excuse.

Re: Disney Florida Holiday - any pointers?

Thanks to WD for the GoPro advice! LOL

I have spent a load of time on holidays taking pics and actually missed seeing the thing I am looking at, I would like to avoid this in America.

I might even get a pic of myself, which are few and far between, wearing my new RetroBike t-shirt which I received for Fathers Day today!

Thanks all,

Very interesting. I asked the question as someone I know had used a bus with a 2 week ticket and they got abuse from the bus driver for not tipping - there were no baggage handling events - just a normal bus, it may be called the iHop. I was a bit surprised, and I would not be one for taking any abuse for no reason!

Richard
If that happens, you should immediately report any abuse to his employer.

When I was an airport shuttle driver about 20 years ago, some people tipped and some didn't, but I was never dissappointed because I had no guarantee that anyone would tip when I accepted the job, which, by the way, was one of the easiest jobs in the world. Imagine sitting in a shuttle van in the Southern California weather and being able to sleep for hours at time until you were dispatched to the airport, and then take about 8-10 trips to the airport during an 8-hour shift. I imagine that mattress-tester would be the only job that could possibly be any easier.

That said, plenty of my coworkers (if you can call airport shuttle driver in SoCal 'work') complained incessantly about non-tippers, as if they were entitled to tips just for doing their job. The job paid minimum wage, and tips were gravy if you got 'em. Wait staff at restaurants, however, are typically paid only half minimum wage, and they have to report their tips to their employers for tax purposes, so I always tip them even if they're having a rough day. It's rare to find a surly waiter or waitress because they know they're dependent on tips, so they're usually always polite and pleasant.

As for that bus driver you mentioned, I don't know what his problem was, but he's lucky he didn't get a boot up his backside. IMO if he doesn't like the job, he's free to quit whenever he wants, and there's somebody right behind him with a better attitude who's eager to take that job.

Re: Disney Florida Holiday - any pointers?

Thanks for the response, it makes sense to me to be polite.

I have been told 15% is a normal tip, and to be careful about tipping twice as it can be added to a bill. All a bit odd to me as we normally tip for good service not poor.

Evening all,

Well i am home after 2 weeks in the sun- did you miss me? (don't answer please)

We managed on public transport and some shuttle buses and it worked reasonably well - a little patience and it was good enough. I suspect the buses may have been quicker than a car getting to the parks as there was no need for parking etc

I tipped plenty and got no abuse which was good - current tips are 15 to 20% for food and 5% for drinks! All odd but i complied.

It was busy and queues were averaging around a hour and a max of 2 hours but my daughter managed and i was good.

Fast passes need research if anyone is going - PM for advice.

Universal was great - Disney was also great but in a different way. I would not hesitate to tell people to go to Universal if they are a bit older - Disney is not for kids but Universal had more to appeal to me and my daughter too - Scooby Doo and Homer Simpson are the two mentionable.

I bought some clothes and did not buy a camera, my current one worked fine.

next time, i will bring more appropriate clothes - 110 degrees and humid needs loose light clothes!! And, next time, i will have an exact shopping list. On the shopping subject - a pair of Tommy Hilfiger jeans cost £6.70 - bargainicisous!!! Adidas trainers - £79 here, cost me £29.

I saw no bike stuff though and about 2 bikes the whole time we were there - too warm for it i suspect or they were out at 5am when it was cool enough to exercise.

Thanks to all for the advice, i appreciate it and it was a great help, if anyone needs any pointers, i will try and help.

I should say that we were at parks 12 days out of the 14!! I need another holiday but my 8 year old was fine!!

Thanks all,

Richard

Re:

Richard

Glad to hear fun was had. Summer time in Florida can be brutal. Spent many a summer down there in my youth. If any bikers would be out definitely early morning and most likely would not see a mountain bike. Highest elevation I recall is 330ft. It is definitely all about the mouse. Looking forward to the expanding stories.

Cheers
