Disc Drive woes

If you want the disk-drive experience without the expense just peg half a dozen playing cards to your seatstay so they flick on the spokes when the wheel goes round...

...still not as noisy as a disk-drive!

Please excuse my naivety, but what is / was the point of disc drive wheels? Was it just aerodynamics, were they lighter, or was it a resilience / strength advantage? I must admit, they were slightly before I started getting into mountain bikes, or at least by the time I started learning about high-end stuff they were being phased out.

That said, I'm about to start a 1994/5-ish race rebuild and I'm kind of intrigued...

The only thing you need to know is that they are the coolest thing ever, just behind Jonny T and JMC. The fact they they are ruinously expensive, potentially a nightmare to build and make a lot of noise is completely beside the point.

I'd have one on every bike I have, but I'd have to sell the house first!

To be fair to the white socked man, Tioga spelt it wrong first... copying from Sugino Tension Disc.

Agree white socks too. But only for sport NOT for wearing with black trousers

I have some of the socks. They are actually quite awesome :D

Same reason as front discs on road bikes etc, I presume...
OK sometimes (but increasingly rare) for pursuiting in an enclosed velodrome but completely unpredictable in a crosswind outside.

All the best,

Anyone know why they never made them for the front wheel?

They made some prototypes. JT gave them the thumbs down, and the project was scrapped.

As a (possible) aside does anyone recall some Tioga adverts (or maybe just a MBA) feature early 90s which showed some individuals completing some epic journey on bike's with disk drives. Think it was trans-siberia or something. Seem to recall they were running disk drives front and rear, however given my memory is hazy and my MBAs are in storage no means of checking if any of this is true!

That's triggered a distant memory for me too... I vaguely recall an article about a guy doing Iditabike or Iditasport on a bike with a disk drive rear wheel. I don't have many mountain bike mags left but will have a hunt through what I've got, at some point soon.

Thanks :) Black is ideal for mtb, I'd agree. Don't forget we also have a road section. White socks on the road are a must imho, we all know who populised black socks on the road....

Well off topic but white has never been a popular colour for road socks for me as one wet ride and they become stained road grime grey - and can't be cleaned with environmentally friendly detergents.

The black retrobike socks are great for the road as they aren't fully black and don't go too far past the ankle.

Back on topic. Other than stickers, whats the difference between a disk drive and a disk drive pro??

I thought the Disk Drive was so named to appeal to computer geeks.

Imagine their excitment if a Disk Drive was teamed with a set of Kona Drive A:\ and Drive B:\ tyres...
