Disc brake question (possibly dumb)

being a bit of a snob, I look down and spit on cble operated disc brakes but I bought a Tektro front cliper, new for a Tenner of the bay, to fit to froiend bike and was pleasantly surprised.

Piece of cake to set up - was done outisde of Bike Hut (Halfords) and feels like good power, but I didn't ride the bike.

A week on and all is well, not to mention clean.

One like it on the'bay for a quid.

(the one I bought included IS adapter, usually they are at least a fiver.)

I'm using an Avid BB7 with 185mm rotor on the front of the '95 Kilauea that I have out in Greece. It's almost too powerful a lot of the time as it's possible to lock the front wheel on tarmac, using one finger, with no difficulty - I should have just used the 160mm rotor.
It's at least as powerful as a Magura Marta with a rotor of the same size - I would say more so.
Set up properly it doesn't rub (why would it?) and it copes with long alpine type fire road descents with no problem. If you use the SD7 levers you can fine-tune the modulation to perfection too.
I don't notice any difference in wear rates between the inboard and outboard pads either.

That's the sort of thing I was hoping to hear. I think a lot of people are sometimes guilty of over-speccing their bikes. I'm not planning on haring down full on downhill at 50mph.

How much dosh are we looking at to go from V brakes to mechanical disc, inlcuding new wheel?

BB7 caliper and rotor from Chain Reaction - about £55 plus whatever you can find a new or s/h wheel for. There are usually some knocking about in the classifieds on here or STW.
So probably about £90 minimum all in, I suppose.

for less money you can get a hydro brke on chain reaction, ive seen a bb7 get so hot the plastic bits warped, but as long as you ant going nuts on it it should be fine i supose...
